My Responsibility
To tell stories and educate through my photos about wildlife, ecosystems, and people. I see this as my purpose as a fine art photographer. I want to protect the vulnerable in nature with my photographs, and I hope my images tell a story.
My Fine Art Photography
There is a photo of me as a toddler at my great aunt’s beach house on Jekyll Island, Georgia pulling back the draperies to see the sunlight dancing over the ocean. I still open my shutters every morning when I first wake up to see the light and to greet the day. When people say, “You have the gift” or “You have the eye for seeing beauty”, I think my gift is a fascination with light, and I’m insanely curious about the world around me especially nature. When I’m behind the camera I’m able to block out distractions, and I’m focused on the moment. I’m in the present usually witnessing something awe inspiring! I’m lost in what I love. I played high school and college basketball, danced, and ran for 22 years, but my knee and ankle had to have surgery. I was told knee replacement would occur before 55 years old and my ankle has two repaired tendons, so I picked up the camera and found a new passion and way to express myself.
People ask me what camera I use when I take photos. It has nothing to do with the camera just as the brush has nothing to do with how well the painter creates. I take photos with my intuition, my emotion, and my perspective of the subject. Experience has made me better over time, and I still have much to learn. I have stated before “a photo is taken with the heart not a camera.” It’s not a gift I possess it’s more of a love affair with life, nature, and light. I’m humbled in nature to be part of something much bigger than myself. And I desperately want to uncover things rarely witnessed and share my sense of wonder with others. I hope when you see a photograph of mine you are suspended for a moment in wonder with me.
For me Ansel Adams said it best, “Sometimes I arrive just when God's ready to have someone click the shutter.” I’m certain most photographers feel similar when the moment unfolds in front of them. I also tell everyone the best camera is the one you have in your hand.
Future
I want to grow and learn in photography by learning from the very best and obtain better
equipment which will allow me to have the best possible images. I might experiment with my
digital images in the future. Most of my images are untouched. I have been a purist in that
way. I strive to capture a photo that doesn't have to be touched up. I plan to keep being a photographer until I can no longer hold a camera.
Personal
Lin Johnson Darden is a native of Albany, Georgia. She is a wildlife photographer and enjoys time outdoors. Her photography focuses on the fascinating ecosystem of our wetlands in Georgia and Florida. While she spends most of her time in Georgia chronicling wildlife in the swamps or on the coast, she also enjoys traveling with her family to the national and state parks in Wyoming, Montana, Tennessee, and the Pacific Northwest to photograph wildlife and landscapes.
